About

Karen is a senior lecturer in mathematics education and the programme co-ordinator for the BSC (Hons) Mathematics and Teaching (QTS) degree; the very same programme she graduated from here at Chichester in 2009. Karen also manages the Subject Knowledge Enhancement programme in mathematics for the University.

Experience:

Karen has a range of experience teaching mathematics in the secondary phase, both in mainstream education and in a specialised SEND setting Prior to coming to work at the University of Chichester she worked for 7 years in secondary mathematics education for West Sussex in the 11-16 sector both as subject leader in a BESD school and assistant curriculum leader in a secondary mainstream school. Alongside this Karen was also involved also with ITT mentoring, and leading on teaching and learning practices.

Karen has an MA in Advanced Professional Practice, is accredited as a Professional Development Lead from the National Centre for Excellence in Teaching Mathematics (NCETM), is a Founding Fellow of the Chartered College of Teaching and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Karen is also the lead for strengthening ITT partnerships across the HEI providers in the Sussex region for the NCETM.

Karen continues to commit to mentoring; inspiring teachers from a variety of disciplines on the Chartered Teacher programme and encouraging peers, both at the university and in partnership organisations, currently working on their PGCert in Teaching and Learning in HE.

Interests:

Karen’s specific areas of interest are educational psychology specific to mathematics learning and the importance of curriculum continuity in mathematics across the transition phases between primary and secondary education.
