Susan Yarnall (Dr. S. J. Monks)

Vocal Tutor

Susan initially trained as a music teacher at the University of London but maintained a singing career performing with opera and choral societies. She has recorded with the BBC West of England Singers and BBC2’s The Late Show, as well as CDs of English Song for BMIC.

Her love of poetry has focussed on performing recital programmes, with art songs by English, American and French composers. In 1999 she began her MA in the Psychology of Music at Sheffield University with research into the adolescent singing voice; Susan was granted a bursary to continue her studies and was awarded her PhD in 2007. She has presented papers at the International Voice Congress in Helsinki, Vancouver and Paris. She has adjudicated at International Singing Competitions and was Chairman of the Association of Teachers of Singing (UK) from 2004-2006. In 2007 she was invited to take part in the Master Singing Teacher Week at Princeton, USA. She teaches privately and at St. Paul’s Girls’ School in London. She continues to perform in recitals around the UK and recently sang Poulenc’s Gloria in Arundel Cathedral.
