  • UCAS Tariff points: 104 (A levels or combination with AS / EPQ / BTEC/ Cambridge Technical)
  • A levels: BCC (plus English Language, Maths and Science GCSEs at grade C/4 or above)

  • We would normally expect applicants to have taken and passed the full GCSE course  however in some circumstances we do accept equivalent qualifications or equivalency tests. Studying Primary Teaching at the University of Chichester is the greatest decision that I have made! The course is delivered by a large team of friendly and dedicated members of staff - who are all knowledgeable former teachers themselves. With their commitment and enthusiasm, they ensure that each individual will leave the course with a deep and meaningful understanding of good teaching practice, enabling us to be the best possible teachers that we can be. I am currently in my third year and will truly miss furthering my education here in this wonderful community. Despite this, I now feel fully prepared and excited to face the challenge of having my own class, as a proud primary school teacher from the University of Chichester.

Course content

Course overview

  • Picture yourself with your own primary school classroom, lighting the fire of learning with the next generation of children. This programme will help you fulfil your ambition to become a primary school teacher.  
  • As a Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) programme, you will acquire the knowledge and skills to enter the profession of teaching.
  • Learn how to teach the full range of primary subjects and develop children’s holistic needs.
  • The Early Years route provides specific training in the Early Years and lower primary age range.
  • The primary routes provide quality training to teach in the 5-11 age range (Key Stages 1 and 2).

Work-based / School-based placements

  • You will receive substantial teaching experience in schools and other settings in every year of the programme.
  • School Experience is structured to help you progress from planning, teaching and managing the learning of a group of children in the first year of study to meeting the needs of a class of pupils in all curriculum areas in the final year of the programme.
  • You’ll get the opportunity to practise in a school early in the course whilst being supported by our expert tutors.
  • Placements will provide distinctive opportunities through which you can develop your professional knowledge and teaching skills.
  • Typically, experiences will be in schools with different organisational characteristics and in contrasting socio-economic catchment areas.
  • In addition to the main suite of placements, you will experience a two-week Special Interest Placement, enabling you to follow an educational area of interest and extend your learning about a particular area of education.
  • There are also opportunities to study abroad and experience schooling in another country.

Our facilities

Over the past few years, we’ve redeveloped both of our campuses so that you have the best facilities available for your degree. We pride ourselves on the quality of the learning environment we can offer our students.

At Bognor Regis campus there is an integrated approach to the provision of learning resources and support.  We offer a substantial collection of books, journals and other materials to help you further your research. A range of study areas for group and quiet study including Wi-Fi areas for laptop use are available, or you can use our open access PC and Mac areas.  We use an electronic learning environment with an expanding portfolio of online library resources from anywhere at any time.  There are also purpose built classrooms for the teacher training courses, as well as lecture and seminar rooms.  

Our award winning Learning Resource Centre is at the heart of the campus.  It hosts a modern library service with areas for quiet and silent study on both floors.  Also situated in the LRC is the Support and Information Zone, Costa Coffee and over 80 open access work stations.  An equipment loans centre offers laptops, tablets and other electronic devices for short and long term loans.

Where this can take you

  • 100% of our graduates who studied BA (Hons) Primary Teaching are in employment or further study within six months after finishing the course (DiscoverUni, 2019)
  • As this is a degree in Primary Teaching, we expect that all students completing the degree will go on to work in primary schools to begin their induction as an early-career teacher.
  • You will be well placed to further your career in education at a later point through leading year groups and subjects or joining the senior leadership team.
  • Alumni have progressed into headship, consultancy roles, initial teacher training lecturing and more.  
  • You will also be eligible to join our Masters degree in Education should you wish to return to study

Work placements

School Experience

School Experience is structured to allow students to progress from planning, teaching and managing the learning of a group of children for the core curriculum (Year One) to meeting the needs of a class of pupils in all curriculum areas (Year Three). You’ll get the opportunity to practise in a school early in the course.

You will receive substantial teaching experience in schools and other settings in the following pattern:

Year One – Four weeks for three days per week in Term One and a block of four weeks in Term Three

Year Two – Seven weeks plus two weeks special interest placement

Year Three – Ten weeks in Term Two

These placements will usually provide distinctive opportunities in which to develop your professional and teaching skills. In particular, efforts will be made to place you in schools with different organisational characteristics and in contrasting socio-economic catchment areas.

The special interest placement will also provide you with experience of an alternative educational setting. It enables you to follow an educational area of interest and extend your learning about a particular area of education, for example: working with bilingual learners, teaching in an outdoor education setting or working in a special school.

Your details will be passed to the government’s Teacher Regulation Agency who will award you Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) on completion of all programme elements.

Indicative modules

All Primary Teaching students undertake the following:

Primary English, Mathematics and Science modules

  • Each subject has its own module to explore the aims, breadth, progression and associated pedagogies with these core curriculum subjects.
  • You will move from developing an understanding of the subject matter to developing your personal philosophy for the teaching of these subjects, grounded in theory and research.

Professional Studies modules (including a module on Inclusion)

  • You will be introduced to key theories related to learning development so as to better understand the way in which early years and primary teaching seeks to educate the ‘whole child’ to ensure that all children can succeed and thrive in school.
  • The modules of professional studies will explore the teaching skills that are required for the classroom, including behaviour for learning, planning for progression and assessing pupils effectively.
  • You will explore effective inclusive practice and recognise how quality first teaching can support the progress of all children.
  • The final professional studies module explores your position as a teacher in the contemporary education landscape. Through this, you will develop and articulate a personal philosophy of education that has built over the three years.

Wider curriculum modules in Year 1 and 2 of the programme which include ICT/Computing, PE, Modern Foreign Languages, Music, Drama, Art, Design & Technology, History and Geography.

  • Through exploring the wider curriculum, you will experience the aims, breadth, progression and pedagogic approaches found in each national curriculum subject.

A Global Citizenship module

  • This module will fulfil the aspiration in the University of Chichester’s Vision Statement that you should become Global Citizens.
  • It will enable you to critically engage with some of the key global issues of our times and prepare you to think beyond the immediate locality.
  • It also examines the link between values, equality, rights and education, and enables discussion on how to promote empathy and intercultural understanding – skills increasingly essential in schools in the UK, and highly sought after by employers around the globe.

A Year 3 module which focuses on ‘Making Change Happen’ in our partnership

  • This module provides a context through which you will develop your skills and confidence in creative problem-solving in their professional world.
  • You will be engaged in the development of an appropriate and novel end product, from conception to completion. In doing so, you will ‘make change happen’ within a school or alternative educational establishment.  

An independent research project in the third year

  • You will develop a clearly expressed research question, supported by a review of the current literature in the field of education.
  • Through a critical discussion of appropriate research methodologies, you will devise a research project that will enable you to answer your question.
  • On school placement, you will conduct field work, enabling you to analyse results and draw conclusions which should impact on future practice.

Subject study

You may select to pursue subject study in any of the following areas:

  • The advanced study of Early Years for those that want to explore early childhood practices in more depth
  • English for students that wish to explore the joys of language, literature and literacy in the classroom
  • Physical Education for those interested in children's physical and motor skills development through practical sessions
  • Social Justice Education for students interested in Sociology, History, Citizenship or Politics with a view of being agents of change
  • Special Educational Needs and Disability for students that want to develop further understanding of the range of needs in primary and specialist schools
  • STEM Education for students that wish to enhance their knowledge and understanding of Science, Technology, Computing and Mathematics
  • You may select to take all subject study modules in the same subject or may select a range of subject modules across the programme.
  • If you select modules in the same subject you will be awarded, on successful completion, a degree award that reflects this e.g. BA (Hons) Primary Teaching with English Education.
  • If you select from a range of subjects across the subject study modules you will be awarded, on successful completion, a degree award that reflects this e.g. BA (Hons) Primary Teaching. The choice to be a specialist or a generalist is yours.

Teaching

  • To reflect primary practice, you are taught in a range of ways.
  • You will join lectures and small seminars where discussion and debate are key to unlocking your understanding.
  • Primary school resources will be shared and you will have the opportunity to try out teaching strategies at university with other students.
  • When on placement, you will be guided through the practice and become the teacher.

Assessment

  • To reflect primary practice, you are assessed in a range of ways.
  • Assessments include essays, presentations, 1:1 discussions, course work, the creation of creative stimuli, and more.

Primary Teacher training applicants are required to have an enhanced Disclosure Barring Service check which needs to be paid for before the start of the course.

Costs incurred during School Experience

Over the duration of your course you will spend 24  weeks on placement. These school experiences are organised  in our partnership schools which extend across East & West Sussex, Hampshire and Isle of Wight and into Surrey. Travel to placements, which  can be by car or public transport, varies but your commute will not usually  exceed an hour from your term time address to the placement school (assuming your term time address is within our partnership area). 

Students may receive a contribution towards travel costs depending upon the distance.

Whilst on School Experience appropriate professional dress will be required.

Students may wish to purchase a laptop/tablet to use whilst on school experience as schools are not required to provide these. 

 

Interviews

The interview is designed to assess the applicant’s suitability for the teaching profession, as well as academic ability.

All applicants will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of professional requirements and an awareness of current educational issues.
