David Grindel

About

David joined the Business School as a Lecturer in June 2022.

Since qualifying as a maths teacher in 1987, he has worked in adult education and training and, having gained an MSc in Educational Research, is now studying for an Ed D at Winchester University researching the needs of adult learners returning to Higher Education. With considerable experience of strategy and change management, he currently teaches subjects around project and programme management, operations management, coaching and mentoring and stakeholder engagement.

After training as a maths teacher, David joined the Royal Navy for a short break from teaching and stayed for 30 years. While managing a wide range of training and educational provision within the military, he spent the last 10 years of service working in change management, focussing on the implementation of portfolio, programme, and project management (P3M) and as the Head of Continuous Improvement (CI) for the Navy Command HQ. A Lean 6 Sigma Black Belt, David left the Navy in 2017 and joined Solent University as Assistant Director Change and Business Improvement, driving the development of a culture of CI across the University through the implementation of a range of staff education, pan University engagement, and the leadership of many successful CI projects.

Having originally trained as a teacher, David decided to refocus his career towards educational delivery, becoming Apprenticeship Project Manager at Solent in January 2019, before taking up a post as a senior lecturer in January 2020. A Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute and the Institute for Leadership and Management, David has a Diploma in Management Consultancy and several business qualifications including MoP, MSP, P3O and PMQ.

Outside of work, and when time allows, David enjoys woodwork, furniture making, cycling and classical music. He has maintained his links with the military as an Army Reservist, working part-time as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army’s Educational and Training Services Branch leading on Continuous Improvement for 16 Brigade based in Colchester.
