Course Overview

We offer a challenging and absorbing experience in the study of Media & Communications taught by a team of dedicated and enthusiastic staff.

In conjunction with a range of practical skills, you will learn how to critically analyse the way the media reflects and influences the political, personal, social and cultural landscape.The degree also offers a range of other module choices from other degrees in the department, namely: Screenwriting and Sports Media. This is a programme that is designed to provide critical and practical skills in preparation for work in media and creative industries. 

Throughout the degree an emphasis will be placed on developing skills of self-reflection and personal development in readiness for the world of work.

In the second and third year there is the opportunity to develop key skills in journalism, marketing, branding and advertising, as well as the study of film and television, popular music, and web-based technologies.

You will also have the opportunity to undertake work placement.

Media &Communications offers an exciting multi-disciplinary degree which provides students with a mix of highly marketable skills and media knowledge.

Work placements

Second year students have the option to undertake a Work Placement and Career Development module in either Semester 1 or Semester 2.

The staff team and professional associates will help these students with identifying suitable placement opportunities and provide additional support and guidance in developing employability skills that will assist in the student getting the most out of the experience and increase their future opportunities. 

Lecturers will introduce you to issues affecting employment, and your learning is supported by individual tutorials and group meetings to discuss your progress.

Level 4

Semester 1        

Theory Toolkit

This module aims to support students in their transition into higher education. It aims to develop student understanding of some of the key concepts, issues, critical perspectives and methodologies that constitute our approach to learning, studying and teaching media. It aims to develop transferable skills in research and analysis.

Practice Toolkit

This module is designed to provide a foundation ‘toolkit’ of practical skills to aid understanding of current creative media industries. Students will be introduced to a range of technical and procedural skills including audio, video, photography, web and digital design. These skills will develop their understanding of the processes involved in the manufacture and delivery of audio-visual presentations within the creative industries. It aims to develop transferable skills in information technology.

Music, Marketing and Promotion

The aim of this module is to explore the affiliation between music, PR, journalism and the marketplace. It will explore the symbiotic relationship that exists between the entertainment industry and the media, both online and in print, with particular reference to adapting presentation for differing audiences, and the interconnection between creativity and representation. It aims to develop transferrable skills in marketing, arts management and effectively utilising contemporary media for promotional purposes.

Photography: History and Practice

This module serves as foundation for developing both technical and contextual understanding of photography, its history and practice. The module enables students to analyze the effect of photography on culture, contemporary representations and visual language. Its aims are to develop transferable skills in core practical and conceptual understanding, and photography’s influence on image construction and meaning.

Semester 2        

Mobile Communications

This module offers a critical study of mainstream mobile technologies and digital culture more broadly and examines how these devices keep people connected to information sources and others. More often, these devices have become more than just tools for communication, rather they keep one involved in the world. The course is concerned with how such technologies have transformed personal communication, working and consumption practices, information seeking behaviours, while also offering opportunities for creativity and self-promotion.


This module develops a critical understanding of the contemporary global, national and local work of journalists in different areas, from hard news journalism to niche interest writing and online presentation. The module considers different forms of writing style, such as reviewing or feature-writing, across a range of different media technologies. It provides a basic guide to the narrative structure of writing for news stories, magazines and on-line contexts, including blogs, podcasts and YouTube channels. Further issues explored are the shifting status of journalism as a form of employment, and a consideration of the legal and ethical issues of being a professional journalist.

Hollywood Film-making

This module aims to both explore and to problematise Hollywood films as textual and as cultural products, and place these products in a context which traces their aesthetic and formal development. This approach is designed to provide students with a firm grounding in film studies.

Documentary: History and Practice

The aim of this module is to consider and critically discuss the important genre of documentary, looking at a range of historical and contemporary examples in order to gain an understanding of the processes of production. Students will be introduced to the basics of documentary through historical, theoretical and technological perspectives before then creating their own Research Portfolio and Proposal document. The focus is on research, not on production.

Level 5

Semester 1

Marketing and Advertising

This module aims to provide students with some essential principles in marketing and enable students to both analyse and construct advertising images and messages. It aims to develop transferable skills in responding to a set brief.

Media Industries

This module will provide students with the critical understanding of the organisational dynamics and structures of the creative and media industries. Increasingly the creative and media industries have experienced a degree of convergence and integration. This has resulted in an intensified merging of those industries which demands students to be able to navigate their way through a complex field and necessitates flexible skill sets and work patterns across a range of media.

Reality TV in the Digital Age

This module aims to explore Reality TV as a global television product for the digital age.  The course examines the development of documentary style factual television into reality based entertainment programs and its transformation into multiple and hybrid generic formats.  The module will introduce the origins of the development of reality TV and will explore aspects of TV scheduling, production values, global formats, audience profiling, and commercial sponsorship associated with factual representations of the ‘real’ and the ‘ordinary’ in everyday life.


British Film

This module aims to develop student’s knowledge and understanding of British cinema. It examines a range of perspectives on the subject which build to form a comprehensive picture of a national industry.

Factual Interview Techniques

This module aims to explore the importance of the recorded interview in film and TV research and practice. Students will engage with a range of recorded interview techniques and styles as employed by researchers, documentarians and journalists. As such, the focus of the module is on ‘factual’ stories and those who can reveal them. Students will also examine the role ethics play in the development and presentation of filmed interviews.


Industry Engagement and Conventions

This module offers students the opportunity to learn about the vibrant and continuously changing ways in which the media industries are promoted and discussed in trade shows, eSports events, fan conventions, conferences, and festivals. Within this exciting and ever-expanding environment, there has become a growing intersection of technology and entertainment. This module will encourage students to have exposure to the emerging media markets within a range of promotional contexts and to utilise in a self-reflexive manner these experiences to inform their own future career plans.

Semester 2

Politics of Celebrity

This module seeks out to explore celebrity politics in contemporary Western democracies with a particular focus on changes since the 1960s. The module focuses on two kinds of celebrities: first, celebrities who become political activists engaging in diplomatic campaigning and, second, politicians who undergo the processes of mediatised celebratisation in order to become campaign stars.

Journalism and Blog Culture

The aim of this module is to examine the nature of contemporary media, how it operates and how it differs from traditional journalism, and equip the student to fully understand the marketplace they will confront if they wish to make a career in that world. It draws on the dual strands of (i) effective information dissemination in the online age and (ii) comprehension of the technologies involved, including how they may be manipulated. It aims to develop transferable skills in design, online presentation, writing and SEO (Search Engine Optimization).

War Films

This module examines the historical, aesthetic, and thematic development of war films. It explores examples from contemporary American cinema, focusing primarily on WW II and the Vietnam War, and places these examples in the relevant historical context. The module will follow a thematic approach, exploring some of the major topics in war films while dealing with some of the core (theoretical) issues of representing war on screen. It takes a cross-disciplinary approach by drawing upon media and cultural studies, historical approaches and questions around cultural memory.


This module provides students with a lively mix of content that explores the historical and critical elements of comedy while also providing a learning environment where students can integrate some of the basic skills of creating a short performance with a particular emphasis on stand-up comedy.


Multi camera Live Events

This module aims to expand upon the work produced in Film in Performance by exploring the use of multi-camera recording techniques and the management of various events. It aims to provide students with a range of technical experiences and knowledge of events practice, while developing transferable skills in creating material to a client’s requirements.

Level 6

Semester 1

Dissertation (45 credits)

The aim of the dissertation and individual practice is to produce a substantial piece of work sustained over two semesters. It aims to develop transferable skills in undertaking large scale independent projects and critical reflection on the outcomes of such projects.

Digital Marketing

The aim of this module is to examine the developments and methodologies of online marketing. It draws on a range of media to provide students with an understanding of how online platforms work as marketing mechanisms, and how social media use can be strategized as a resource. It aims to develop transferable skills in writing, presentation, communication, and digital commerce.

Advanced Digital Photography

The module will provide students with the opportunity to investigate and develop a range of professional creative techniques in the field of digital photography. Students will explore and develop technical and procedural understanding and skill in their practical and creative application. The module will draw from a broad range of production and post production practice to develop a deeper understanding of processes involved in image capture construction and manipulation.


American TV Drama

The module examines contemporary American television drama, focusing primarily (though not exclusively) on HBO as a network with a distinct visual, thematic and narrative style that clearly demonstrates noteworthy developments within the television industry. The module will consider HBO and other series in relation to a variety of issues, such as a serial television, developments in television production, and shifts in reception. The module aims to critically examine and analyse the aesthetic and ideological content of some of these texts, focusing on a selection of series.

Documentary Project

During this module individual students or pairs of students will be given the opportunity to create a short documentary from concept to completion. Guidance on pre-production will include advice on narrative structure, ethical consideration, risk assessment, research techniques and scheduling. This will be followed by training in practical production and camera skills for documenting reality and the experiences of real people. Post production will navigate editing disciplines including modifying and refining narrative structure in the light of coverage acquired in the production phase and awareness of technical processes and standards.



This module examines the history and development of the horror genre and explores examples from contemporary American cinema and beyond. It takes a cross-disciplinary approach by drawing upon film studies, historical approaches, and theoretical frameworks that have dominated critical responses to the genre, such as psychoanalysis. It aims to develop transferable skills in reflection on the learning process.

Semester 2

The aim of the dissertation and individual practice is to produce a substantial piece of work sustained over two semesters. It aims to develop transferable skills in undertaking large scale independent projects and critical reflection on the outcomes of such projects.

Global TV & Cinema

This module will explore the political economy of the global, national and local film and television industries. Issues of transmedia marketing, distribution, consumption, audiences and cultural and cross-cultural relevance will also be explored.


This module examines the games industry, games studies, and trends in game design and development. The module begins by assuming that games are meaningful as cultural expressions worthy of scholarly attention.

Teaching and assessment

Students will be taught a range of practical skills to enhance their employment prospects in the fields of journalism/media writing, Advertising, Marketing and new media/mobile technologies.

This is an industry-facing course with a mix of theory/history and practical training opportunities.

As a student within a community of undergraduates, you will develop your teamwork skills, take part in multi-camera live-event filming, study trends in contemporary media cultures, and have the opportunity to work within a vibrant cultural hub of actors, dancers, filmmakers, composers, orchestras, scriptwriters and choreographers.

You will have the opportunity to take part in overseas practical and research projects and, alongside developing your practical and critical skills, you will enhance your fit-for-industry business skills, helping you to find your place in one of the most exciting and diverse professions.
