Course content

The programme expects to attract entrants who have a background in the subject or a related subject area, acquired through previous study (a bachelor's degree with honours or equivalent) and entrants who have acquired experience through work or other means that enables staff responsible for admissions to be confident of the candidate's ability to succeed in the programme. 

Course will included a diverse curriculum including music industry analysis, business and enterprise, innovation in the music industry, professional skills development and a commercial project. 

It will be taught at Platform One in Isle of Wight, or at WaterBear in Brighton. 

Our facilities

Facilities include professional recording studios, Pro Tools suite, creative suite, rehearsal rooms, showcase rooms and lecture rooms. 

The WaterBear Brighton Campus includes teaching rooms, a recording and mixing suite, a green screen room, a Mac Suite and tutorial rooms. Rehearsal Rooms are also provided.

Indicative modules

Music Industry Analysis

This module offers the opportunity for in-depth analysis of the current status of the music industry; reflecting on commercial models, industry reports, trends, media response and professional practitioners. The module will include a broad overview of research methodology and postgraduate research skills. Students are encouraged to focus on their own creative practice in relation to future career aspirations and employability.

Business & Enterprise

The music industry continuously desires innovation and as such needs entrepreneurs. This module is all about embracing, encouraging and nurturing the entrepreneurial spirit. There will be the opportunity to explore what is needed to be able to turn an idea into a successful business. The module will encourage students to explore, develop and debate enterprise skills. It is essential that students feel equipped and confident to take risks, show initiative and undertake new ventures.

Personal Skills Development

This industry-focused module is all about the development of personal skills in relation to individual career aspirations. There will be flexible study opportunities that build on the individuals’ current work and/or professional practice. The purpose is to develop expertise in relation to personal career aspirations and professional industry practice. There is no definitive approach to the module and content will be tailored dependent on aspirations.

Innovation in the Music Industry

This module offers the opportunity to explore, predict and potentially conceive innovations that may impact on the future of the music industry. There will be analysis and evaluation of specific industry case studies including; new innovations, online strategies, digital marketing, impact of new media, new technologies, expectations of consumers, new industry service providers and a look at the accessibility of the global market place.

Commercial Project

This module offers the opportunity to develop an ambitious and personalise Commercial Project in relation to future career aspirations. This module is a consolidation of all of the skills and knowledge acquired during the MA programmes. This is an opportunity to interface and engage with the music industry, to innovate and to secure a place in this highly competitive industry.

International English Studies

Include International English Studies: 

Teaching and assessment

A mixture of critical analysis, academic writing, performance, production and business planning.  Final assessment will be a self directed commercial project.
