Care Leavers

A warm welcome to the University of Chichester Care Leavers information page.

The University of Chichester is an ideal environment for students from a care background.  We have experience in supporting Care Leavers, to achieve their goals and successfully move on to their chosen career path.

There is a close-knit friendly community feel here, which is encouraged by a compact campus. This environment enables our students to form lasting friendships with peers and get to know their lecturers and campus staff very quickly.

This environment enables our students to form lasting friendships with peers and get to know their lecturers and campus staff very quickly.

We hope you will feel part of University life here, from the very first day you arrive, should you choose to study with us.

Informal campus visits can be arranged and we can meet up with you in advance and offer information about our services to help plan your move to University life and Higher Education study.

Care Leavers Package

Please download our Care Leavers guide to find out more about our Care Leavers Package. This optional package offers you year-long accommodation (at current rates), a bursary and wellbeing support to help you fulfil your potential whilst you study.

Am I eligible?

You are eligible for the Care Leavers Package if you are under 25 and have been ‘in care’ with any local authority for at least 13 weeks since the age of 14.  However this is not a hard-and-fast rule and any student with a care background may apply.  The University’s Review Panel will consider each application on a case by case basis.

What might I receive?

Our package includes:

  • A Care Leavers Bursary – (for details of this bursary see our Financial Support Package page).
  • The offer of University accommodation 365 days a year, charged at the current rate, (subject to campus accommodation requests being received by our Accommodation Office by 31 May) so you can settle and stay in halls throughout your time at University.
  • A named Student Wellbeing Adviser to link up with you, if you wish, whilst you study.
  • Support from the Care Leavers Coordinator to provide a central point of contact and advice and information.
  • Advice and guidance is offered during the admissions process and throughout the course of study at the University.
  • Assistance with accommodation enquiries or email accommodation@chi.ac.uk. However please contact us first so we can link up any queries with your application for support.
  • Access to our Student Support and Wellbeing Service, including: Counselling, Mental health support, Health and wellbeing, money advice, disability and dyslexia services, and Chaplaincy.

What is the process?

  1. If you have at some time been in local authority care, then please tell us on your UCAS application, or via an alternative entry route, then your details will be forwarded to our Care Leavers Coordinator.
  2. We will then ask you for some information relating to your time in care and permission to contact the relevant local authority.
  3. Once this is received your application for the Care Leavers Package will go before our Care Leavers Review Panel who will consider such applications on an individual basis.   If successful you will be offered all elements of the package each of which is optional.
