Action Counters Terrorism

The University of Chichester is committed to supporting national efforts to prevent terrorism and keep our community safe.

We take part in the Action Counters Terrorism (ACT) initiative, which encourages everyone to remain alert and report concerns in a safe and responsible way.

ACT is about awareness, not alarm. By knowing what to look out for and how to report concerns, we can help protect our campus and wider community.

Reporting suspicious activity

If you see or hear something that doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts and report it. Your information could help prevent harm.

You can report concerns in the following ways:

What kinds of concerns should be reported?

Like other criminals, those involved in terrorism need to plan and prepare. This activity can sometimes be visible in everyday settings.

You are not expected to investigate or challenge anyone - simply report concerns so they can be assessed appropriately.

You might consider reporting concerns relating to the following.

Unusual research or behaviour

  • Someone accessing or sharing extremist material
  • Promotion of hateful or extremist views
  • Vague or inconsistent explanations for travel

Suspicious activity

  • Unusual deliveries or storage of items
  • Interest in security arrangements, CCTV, or building layouts
  • Behaviour that feels out of place or concerning

Extremist content or safeguarding concerns

If you come across violent or extremist content online, or are worried that someone you know may be becoming radicalised, it is important to seek support early. Concerns can be reported to:

  • Campus Safety staff
  • The police (using confidential reporting routes)
  • University safeguarding
  • Support is focused on early intervention and well-being, not punishment.

Advice to stay safe

While incidents are rare, it is important to be prepared.

National guidance advises: Run - Hide - Tell

  • Run: Move away from danger if it is safe to do so
  • Hide: Find a safe place and stay quiet
  • Tell: Call the police when it is safe

Shared responsibility

Keeping our campus safe is a shared responsibility. By staying aware and reporting concerns appropriately, we can help ensure the University of Chichester remains a safe and welcoming place for everyone.
