Cyber Security and Online Safety

Digital safety is an important part of keeping our university community secure.

Cyber security is about protecting the devices we use, such as smartphones, laptops, tablets, and computers, and the online services we rely on for study, work, and daily life.

It helps prevent unauthorised access to personal and university information, and reduces the risk of fraud, identity theft, and data loss.

As much of our learning and communication now takes place online, taking simple steps to stay secure is more important than ever.

Think before you link

We live in a highly connected world where information is constantly created, shared, and exchanged.

Before clicking links, downloading attachments, or sharing information, ask yourself:

  • Do I know who I am connecting with?
  • Is this email, message, or website genuine?
  • Am I sharing personal or university information securely?
  • Could this be a phishing attempt or scam?

If something doesn’t feel right, pause and check before proceeding.

If you believe your university account has been compromised, please contact the university immediately via (01243) 816222, email at help@chi.ac.uk, or in person at the Learning Resource Centre counters.

If you receive a suspicious email or message

If you receive a suspicious email or message:

  • Recognise the warning signs (unexpected links, urgency, spelling errors)
  • Report it to the university immediately via (01243) 816222, email at help@chi.ac.uk, or in person at the Learning Resource Centre counters
  • Remove it by deleting the message once reported

For national advice on staying secure online and dealing with cyber incidents, visit the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) website.

If you believe you have been a victim of fraud or cyber crime, you can report it to
