Run, Hide, Tell - Emergency Safety Guidance
While serious violent incidents are rare, it is important to understand what to do in the unlikely event of an emergency involving firearms or weapons.
The UK Government’s 'Run, Hide, Tell' guidance provides simple actions to help keep yourself and others safe.
This advice applies both on and off campus.
There are no specific threats to the University of Chichester. This information is provided as part of our commitment to preparedness and safety awareness.
Run
If it is safe to do so:
- Leave the area immediately
- Move away from the source of danger
- Encourage others to come with you, but do not delay your own escape
- Prevent others from entering the danger area if possible
Your safety is the priority.
Hide
If you cannot escape:
- Find a secure location out of sight
- Lock and/or barricade doors where possible
- Silence mobile phones and remain quiet
- Stay hidden until it is safe to leave
Do not open doors for anyone unless you are certain it is safe.
Seeking effective cover
If you need to take cover, choose substantial protection where possible. Examples of more protective cover include:
- Solid brick or concrete walls
- Large fixed structures
- The engine block area of a vehicle
Avoid cover that offers little protection, such as:
- Internal partition walls
- Glass
- Lightweight doors or fences
Tell
When it is safe to do so:
- Call 999 and provide as much information as possible
- If on campus, inform Campus Safety once emergency services have been contacted
- Try to provide:
- Your location
- What you have seen or heard
- A description of the situation, if known
Campus Safety contact details:
Emergency (on campus): (01243 81)6363
Non-emergency support: (01243 81)6222

Recognising and reporting concerns
If you observe behaviour or items that cause concern:
- Do not approach or intervene
- Move to a safe place if necessary
- Report concerns to Campus Safety or the police
Early reporting can help prevent harm.
