Campus Security Measures

The University of Chichester uses a range of security measures to help maintain a safe and secure environment across its campuses.

These measures are designed to support the well-being of students, staff, and visitors while ensuring the University remains an open and welcoming place.

CCTV

CCTV is in operation across key areas of the University’s campuses. Cameras are used to help deter crime, support the safety of our community, and assist Campus Safety staff in responding to incidents.

CCTV systems are monitored by trained staff and are used responsibly and proportionately.

The operation and management of CCTV at the University of Chichester complies with data protection legislation and relevant codes of practice.

Please see our CCTV policy for further details.

Building access

Some University buildings use controlled access systems, such as card readers, to help manage entry and protect occupants outside of normal opening hours.

These systems allow access to be monitored and help ensure buildings are used safely and appropriately.

If you experience any issues accessing a building, Campus Safety or SIZ can provide assistance or advice.

Access control in emergency situations

University buildings are designed so that occupants can exit safely in emergency situations, such as fire alarms or power failures.

Access control systems are designed to default to a safe state to ensure people are not trapped inside buildings.

If you notice a door or access point that does not appear to be operating correctly, please contact Campus Safety or raise a Support Me job via “request estates support” as soon as possible.

Campus safety patrols

Campus Safety staff carry out regular patrols across University buildings and external areas.

Patrols help to provide a visible safety presence, identify and respond to incidents, offer advice and assistance, and support students, staff, and visitors.

Campus Safety staff are always happy to help. Reporting concerns early can help prevent or resolve incidents.

Key control

The University operates secure key management arrangements to ensure keys are issued, monitored, and returned appropriately.

Keys are:

  • Stored securely
  • Issued only to authorised individuals
  • Managed through controlled systems
  • Tracked to support safety and accountability

If you have queries about key access or management, please contact the Campus Safety team.
