Working with the Police

Our Campus Safety team works closely with Sussex Police to help keep our campus community safe.

Campus Safety staff are regularly contacted by students, staff, and visitors for advice, reassurance, or to report concerns such as incidents, crime, or anti-social behaviour.

The team will listen, create an official record where appropriate, offer advice, and take action or signpost you to the most appropriate service. This may include referral to the police or other external agencies when needed.

In many cases, contacting Campus Safety first allows concerns to be managed quickly and appropriately within the University.

When to contact the police directly

There may be occasions where you wish, or need, to contact the police without going through the university.

This might include:

  • Reporting a crime that has taken place off campus
  • Seeking police advice or updates
  • Providing information anonymously
  • Situations where immediate police assistance is required

Sussex Police provide a range of reporting and information services, including online reporting and non-emergency contact options. These can be found here.

Emergency situations

If someone is in immediate danger or a crime is in progress, always call 999.

If it is safe to do so, Campus Safety should also be informed so the University can provide support and assistance. Our on-campus emergency number is (01243 81)6363.

Non-emergency police contact

For non-urgent police matters, you can contact the police by calling 101.

This service is available 24 hours a day and can be used to report non-emergency incidents or seek advice.

Support after reporting

Whether you report a concern to Campus Safety or directly to the police, the university can offer ongoing support, including:

  • Welfare and well-being support
  • Practical advice and guidance
  • Liaison with relevant university services

If you are unsure who to contact, Campus Safety will be happy to advise. To get in touch, please call or email using the details below.
