International Academic & Language Support

At the University of Chichester your experience as a student is of the utmost importance to us. We aim to provide our students with personalised care and support. IALS is an essential and distinctive feature of the support we offer our international students. The package is specially designed to support international students  for whom English is not a first language and/or those who have not previously been educated in the UK. The support runs alongside your regular programme, at undergraduate or postgraduate level, and across all subjects.

The University of Chichester recognises that international students may face special challenges when they enter UK university education. IALS offers you specialised help with the development of your English language skills and with their use in a UK academic environment. It also supports you in making the transition to study in a new academic culture.

• A 1-day orientation programme specially designed for the needs of international students.
• A regular point of contact with a member of staff who can supply answers to your questions about academic life in the UK.
• A language profiling service so that you, and your department(s), may be advised on the best options for language support*.
• Individual tutorial support, (up to 3 hours per student per semester), to help you plan, carry out and check assessed work*.
• English language classes.
• The use of extra time and bilingual dictionaries in University examinations*.

*Open only to those for whom English is not a first language.

• You will receive advice on your use of IALS on entry to the University.
• You will have a regular tutor who will advise you throughout your studies.
• You can, if you wish, cease to use the support at any point in your studies.

These services are provided at no extra cost to you.

The tutors are all members of the university’s international team. They are qualified in the teaching of English as an international language, and all have experience of studying, working and/or living in a culture other than their own.

As an international student, you will automatically be enrolled when you begin your studies at the University.
