Why Work Abroad?
Working abroad offers numerous benefits, whether it's part of your studies, during the summer, or as a post-graduate option. Here are the top five reasons why you should consider this enriching experience:
- Cultural Immersion: Living and working in a foreign country provides a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in a different culture. This exposure fosters adaptability, open-mindedness, and cross-cultural communication skills, all of which are increasingly valuable in today's globalized world.
- Professional Development: Working abroad allows you to gain practical work experience in an international setting. You have the chance to apply theoretical knowledge gained during your studies to real-world scenarios, develop industry-specific skills, and expand your professional network.
- Global Networking Opportunities: Working abroad enables you to build a diverse network of professionals from various backgrounds and industries. Building connections with colleagues, mentors, and industry experts from different parts of the world can open doors to future career opportunities, both locally and internationally.
- Personal Growth: Working abroad requires individuals to step out of their comfort zones and embrace new challenges independently. It encourages personal growth, self-reliance, and resilience as you navigate unfamiliar environments, overcome language barriers, and adapt to cultural differences.
- Enhanced Global Perspective: Experiencing life and work in a different country fosters intercultural competence, which is increasingly essential in our interconnected world. You will gain a deeper understanding of global issues, cultural nuances, and societal dynamics. This global perspective is highly valued by employers seeking candidates who can thrive in diverse, multicultural environments.
Credit-bearing work experience
As part of your degree, you may be required to complete a work placement, which can be done abroad with approval from the Academic Module Lead. These placements are credit-bearing, meaning the hours you complete abroad will contribute towards your total UK Credits for your degree. They can be paid, unpaid, or voluntary opportunities.
To ensure your credits are transferred back, it's essential to cover the minimum number of hours required by your module.
We strongly recommend attending a drop-in session to learn more about the process, funding options, and to get answers to any questions you may have.
Before departing, it's crucial to inform your Academic Module Lead or the Exchange Coordinator and obtain approval for your placement abroad. Once ready, please complete the application form at least 2 months prior to your departure to avoid delays in funding payments.
Non-credit-bearing & recent graduate work experience
If you wish to pursue a work placement during your free time, such as during the summer, or after your studies as a recent graduate within 12 months from your graduation, you can still access funding for this fantastic experience.
Similar to credit-bearing placements, we recommend attending a drop-in session to understand the process, funding options, and address any queries you may have. While these placements are not credit-bearing, they offer valuable opportunities for personal and professional growth.
If you have already secured your work placement, apply now.
