Sustainability

With over 5000 students, 900 staff, two campuses and some 40 buildings, we have a considerable impact on the environment. We take these impacts seriously and believe it is vital that we become more sustainable in all our activities.

We do this by looking at what we are doing, checking that we make the most effective and efficient use of valuable resources, identifying where we need to make improvements to ensure our lives on campus are greener. We have been accredited British Standard BS8555 (Acorn phase 1 - 5), this is an Institute of Environmental Management Assessment (IEMA) scheme for implementing an EMS.

The University recognises the need to improve its environmental management and begin to address the principles of sustainable development in its day to day activities as well as longer term decision making.

This will necessitate:

  • Integrating environmental management within the University's governance
  • Considering the environmental and ethical impact of the decisions that the University makes, minimising the negative impact and maximising the positive
  • Improving procedures for the efficient use of resources
  • Establishing management systems for performance assessment
  • Better management of waste and recycling
  • Sustainability in construction and estates works
  • Better management of its green spaces to improve biodiversity
  • Creating a sustainable culture and ethos through staff and student engagement

Becoming a Fairtrade University was the joint achievement of staff and the students’ union and is a practical demonstration of our commitment to become more ethical by promoting and raising awareness and availability of products with the FAIRTRADE Mark. The approved application showed that the University made a commitment to supporting and using Fairtrade products such as food, drinks and clothing are making sure they are available in as many outlets as possible on its campuses, such as the student dining halls, cafés, students’ union bar and shop.
